7 Emergency Physics Sub Lesson Plan Ideas

Updated: Jan 24, 2022

This is a picture of an emergency physics sub lesson plan.

Here are some of my favorite emergency sub lesson plans. I hope these are helpful if you find yourself having to miss a day unexpectedly. Some of these are free physics sub lesson plans, some are digital sub lesson plans, and others are printable sub lesson plans. I hope I've included something to fit your needs!

My main criteria for an ''Emergency Physics Substitute Lesson Plan'' is that it must be super easy for a sub or another teacher to do and not require knowledge students do not currently have. I usually leave digital work for students when I am absent so I do not have to ask somebody to make copies for me, but if I know I will be out I might leave something printable. Here are some of my go-to sub assignments:

Emergency Physics Sub Lesson Plan Ideas

1. Physics Ted Ed Lessons - These are amazing! You can use these as is and have students answer in a Google Doc, or bulk them up and make them extra special. Some of my favorites are:

2. Current Events in Physics. You can create your own current event using something happening in the news or use this one from my TpT store that will work with any current events.

3. Crash Course Physics - Have students research three of these and write summaries, create a quiz, and share their quiz with a friend.

4. Physics Color By Number Sheets - These work great if you want to leave an assignment on a specific topic. They are also printable if you prefer something paper for students to do. I am making new ones each week. Reach out to me if you want me to make one for a specific topic! You can get a free one on speed, distance, and time here.

5. International Space Station Virtual Field Trip - This is a freebie, and although it is designed for middle school, I think it would work with a group that might challenge directions with a sub.

6. PhET Online Labs - These are great for students who have used PhET simulations before. I would not leave these with students if it was their first time using them. Here is a free motion graph PhET Lab in both digital and printable format.

7. Google Classroom Assignments - This is my go-to when I am sick, as I can assign students something from home and know they will get it done and learn something in the process. Here is a free Ohm's Law Google Activity.

What are your go-to emergency physics sub lesson plans for your physics students?
